When life gives you lemons…read below and watch my video on the benefits of warm water with lemon!

Today’s topic is warm water with lemon! Seems a little weird right? Well, actually there are multiple health benefits to drinking this dynamic duo first thing in the morning, so here we go!

I have been drinking warm water with lemon every morning for years now. It goes hand in hand with my daily cup of tea. Actually, I now find it more comforting than a cup of tea, matcha, or decaf coffee (I don’t drink caffeinated coffee anymore!), and I feel out of sorts when I forgo drinking it in the AM.

Lemon has both healing and cleansing properties, and drinking warm water with lemon can benefit your health immensely. Not to mention, it restores and hydrates your body!

Room temperature water is actually easiest to digest, so you want to drink warm (not too hot and not too cold) water with lemon first thing upon waking up in the morning. I typically squeeze ½ a lemon into my water. I happen to enjoy the taste of lemon so I tend to use a bit more. If you prefer to use a ¼ of the lemon, that is okay too. It is your own personal preference.

The benefits of drinking warm water with lemon are numerous:

1.. Detoxifies your body

a.. Lemon is a natural diuretic that cleanses your body. Warm water with lemon helps to remove toxins from your blood and flush them out of your system.

2.. Aids your digestive system and gets things moving.

a.. TMI, but it can seriously get things moving, so prepare yourself! Like I mentioned before, lemon is a diuretic that helps to flush out toxins.

3.. Balances your PH levels

a.. Although lemons are acidic, once in your body they alkalize. They are actually one of the most alkalizing foods! Lemons remove acidity from the body, which in turn helps to ease pain and inflammation in your joints. Also, your body is more susceptible to disease when your body is more acidic.

4.. Fights the common cold

a.. Packed with Vitamin C, lemons help to strengthen your immune system. Whenever I am sick, I double, or even triple my warm water with lemon intake. I also drink the following concoction: ginger tea with lemon and a dash of cayenne pepper. This combination helps me feel better faster and within a few days of drinking this a few times a day, I feel 100% healthy again.

5.. Helps clear acne and blemishes

a.. Lemons help to heal your skin. Vitamin C kills certain types of bacteria responsible for causing acne. Vitamin C also helps reduce wrinkles and heal blemishes from the inside out.

6.. Helps you lose weight

a.. Lemons have a high content of pectin fiber, which cuts hunger cravings. Also, studies also show that people who maintain a more alkaline diet lose weight faster. In addition to drinking warm water with lemon in the morning, I tend to drink it before bed as well. I certainly notice that late night hunger cravings are cut when I drink my bedtime water with lemon.

The scent of a lemon is also great for enhancing your mood! I have noticed that lemons are used in many essential oil blends meant to revitalize, rejuvenate, and invigorate.

I also love lighting my Meyer’s Lemon candle in the morning. It’s so refreshing and stimulating, and it certainly boosts my mood as well.

It is very important to note that acid in lemons can harm the enamel on your teeth. It is best to brush your teeth first and then drink your warm water with lemon. But be sure to wait a few minutes before drinking it. A healthy mouth will create a layer of pellicle on the teeth and protect them after you brush. You can also drink your lemon water and then wait at least 30 minutes to brush your teeth. Otherwise, brushing and using toothpaste can thin the enamel.  I always rinse my mouth with water (don’t use mouthwash!) after drinking lemon water as well.

To make this dynamic duo, you’ll need: lemons, a lemon squeezer, your favorite mug, and a means of making warm water. I use an electronic tea kettle:

If you want more of a boost, you can try adding a dash of cayenne pepper to your warm water with lemon. Cayenne pepper is known to boost your metabolism, but be careful because it is seriously spicy!
