When the runway foreshadows the red carpet

When Johnathan Kayne appeared on “Project Runway” in season 3 and “Project Runway All-Stars” in 2012, his pedigree as a gown maker was self-evident.

And there is something telling about his talent as a designer glancing at his red carpet resume, which includes big names like J. Lo., Miranda Lambert, and Dolly Parton.

So it’s no surprise that the collection he showed on the runway at Society Fashion Week at the Hotel Roosevelt in New York City on Sept. 8 was filled with red carpet stunners. The gown collection, however, was not reserved solely for posing at the step and repeat in front of an army of paparazzi. Any woman looking to wow at a gala or prom could do no better than selecting one of Kayne’s latest.

One of the appeals of Kayne’s collection is that it evoked an old school red carpet look—gowns that starlets would have worn in the days before reboots, superheroes, and CGI. Modern looks may reflect the need to represent modern times. But often modern turns dated once captured in the lens of the camera.

This is what was seen walking down the runway during New York fashion week.
