(Updated May 7) The fashionable set of Connecticut will be heading to the center of the state this week, as Middlesex Fashion Week begins in earnest Thursday, May 9.

A red carpet event will be held at Yu’s Fusion, 220 Main St., Middletown Wednesday, May 8 at 6:30 p.m. as a prelude to the festivities.

The fashion event – which includes models walking the runway in the latest styles from the region’s fashion designers —  has expanded its reach a bit since last year when it debuted as Middletown Fashion Week, explained the event’s director Jessi-Mar Ewart.

“This year, we have decided to take the show across the county of Middlesex,” said Ewart, who is stepping into the spotlight himself with his first resort beach collection.

“Fashionistas should expect to see creative fashion and inspiration for their next look,” said the Middletown resident. “There will be nights of innovation and fun.”

Ewart said, “The goal (of the event is to showcase) fashion with a purpose. Most fashion shows are there to showcase clothing, but I want to showcase fashion designers and models on a platform that will grow for a Connecticut fashion scene.” Plus, he said he wants to use fashion as a means to boost philanthropic causes in the state.” Several local charities will benefit from some of the proceeds raised at the show, said Ewart.

Aside from himself, Ewart said the designers featured at the event, which runs May 9-11 at assorted locations, “come from all over the country. We have designers from Boston, DC, New York, Rhode Island, Springfield and Connecticut.”

For those attending the shows, Ewart encouraged them to show their personal style. The evenings will find the organizers saluting the best dressed attendees.

“We want to see everyone coming out in their best style — with art inspiration,” said Ewart. “We want to see people getting creative with their outfits and making a statement on the red carpet.”
